The mile distance has a special place in the hearts of the people in America and England. Although America began testing kilometers in place of miles on our highways in the 1970's it was met with great resistance and was not continued. Of all the running events, except maybe the 100 meters dash and the marathon, the mile probably holds the most interest and most Americans are somewhat familiar with it. Also, many Americans remember having run a mile in school and may even remember there personal best time. And of all the races we may have ran, the mile is probably the best indicator of how good of shape we are actually in.
